Paying bills and other people in Online Banking

Your protection when using online banking

If you need to pay bills or pay someone, you'll find it easy in Online Banking. Read on to find out how to do it.

To pay a person or a bill, log in to Online Banking and click on Pay a Bill or Someone in the right-hand menu of the At a Glance page.

What you need to do will depend on whether you use a passcode or PINsentry to log in to Online Banking. Select the relevant section below.

I log in with a passcode

If you log on using a passcode, you can make payments to people already on your payee list and set up new payments to over 300 pre-approved beneficiaries, including utility companies, credit cards, some building societies and local councils.

If you want to make a payment to friends or family and anyone not on the pre-approved list for the first time, you'll need to upgrade to PINsentry first and wait for your PINsentry device to be sent to you. You can upgrade to PINsentry by visiting the At a Glance screen in Online Banking and selecting Upgrade to PINsentry from the menu.

How you pay a bill or someone depends on whether you want to:

  • Pay a Bill/someone I’ve paid before
  • Pay a bill/someone I’ve paid before but with a new reference
  • Pay a bill/someone for the first time

Pay someone I’ve paid before
To do this, log in to Online Banking and click on Pay a Bill or Someone in the right-hand menu of At a Glance.

  • Select the account you wish to pay from. Then select the 'Pay a Bill/someone I’ve paid before' option and click next
  • On Step 2, choose your payment details. Select who you want to pay from the dropdown and the amount. Choose when you want the money to leave your account - either immediately or by entering a specific working day - then click next
  • On Step 3, check the details you entered previously. If you need to, select the Change button to edit the details. Otherwise click the Confirm button to complete the payment
  • Step 4 confirms that your payment has been successful

Pay a bill/someone I’ve paid before but with a new reference
To do this, log in to Online Banking and click on Pay a Bill or Someone in the right-hand menu of At a Glance.

  • Select the account you want to pay from then select 'pay a bill/someone I’ve paid before but with a new reference' option. Click next
  • On Step 2, choose your payment details. Select who you want to pay from the dropdown and enter your payment reference, such as the card or customer reference number for the company you are paying
  • Enter the amount you want to pay. Choose when you want the money to leave your account - either immediately or by entering a specific working day - then click next
  • On Step 3, check the details you entered previously. If you need to, select the Change button to edit the details. Otherwise click the Confirm button to complete the payment
  • Step 4 confirms that your payment has been successful

Pay a bill/someone for the first time and to see a pre-approved beneficiary

  • To see a pre-approved beneficiary, log in to Online Banking with your passcode
  • Select Pay a Bill or Someone from the right-hand menu on your At a Glance screen
  • From the dropdown menu on Step 1, select the account you'd like to make the payment from. You'll also need to select the option to pay a bill/someone for the first time
  • You will be asked to choose your payment details on step 2. If you're paying a company, type the name in the box and select the green search button.  A list of companies may be displayed depending on what you've typed
  • Select the relevant option by clicking on the appropriate button and click next
  • The system will upload the company you want to pay on step 2a. If you cannot find the company using the search, it is not on the pre-approved list and you will need to upgrade to PINsentry to make the payment online. This is also the case if you want to make a payment to friends or family for the first time. Follow the on-screen instructions

If you are able to continue with your payment:

  • Enter a payment reference on step 2a and how much you want to pay. Choose when you want the money to leave your account - either immediately or by entering a specific working day - then click next
  • On Step 3, check the details you entered previously. If you need to, select the Change button to edit the details. Otherwise continue with your payment
  • Step 4 of 4 confirms that your payment transaction has been successful

I log in with PINsentry

Pay a bill/someone for the first time
To do this, log in to Online Banking and click on Pay a Bill or Someone in the right-hand menu of At a Glance.

  • Select the account you want to pay from then select pay a bill/someone for the first time option. Click next
  • On Step 2, choose your payment details. If you're paying a company, type its name in the box and select the search button.  A list of companies may be displayed depending on what you've typed. Select the company you want to pay - we will show the company you select on Step 2a
  • If you're paying friends, family or someone not on our pre-approved beneficiary list, type their name in the ‘Who do you want to pay?' field along with their sort code and account number. Click next
  • We will show company you want to pay on step 2a.  Enter a payment reference and how much you want to pay.  Choose when you want the money to leave your account - either immediately or by entering a specific working day - then click next
  • On Step 3, check the details you entered previously. If you need to, select the Change button to edit the details. Otherwise continue with your payment
  • On Step 3a, you'll need to authorise your payment using PINsentry. Insert  your debit card into the PINsentry card reader and follow the instructions to generate an eight-digit code that you'll need to type on screen
  • Step 4 of 4 confirms that your payment transaction has been successful
