Upgrade your web browser

Online banking

If you're still using Internet Explorer 6 (IE6) to browse the web, you'll need to upgrade to use Barclays Online Banking. IE6 was released back in 2001 by Microsoft, and has been overtaken by newer browsers such as Internet Explorer 8.

Why should I upgrade?

Upgrading your browser will give you more features, stability and security. You’ll also find the Barclays site works better too.

  • IE6 is now outdated when it comes to supporting today's website technology. That means many sites won’t work properly - including Barclays.
  • Recent browsers are faster.
  • Most web browsers can be downloaded for free.
  • IE6 doesn’t have many of the great features you get with more recent browsers. Take tabbed browsing for example – this means you can open new sites in tabs in the same window rather than having multiple windows open.
  • The latest browsers have more security options, providing even better protection against hackers and fraudsters. Some give you the option of Private Browsing, which hides your browsing history from others.
  • We are developing Barclays sites that do not support IE6  – we want to develop sites that give users a rich experience they won’t get in IE6.

What browser do I have?

It’s easy to find out what version of Internet Explorer you have.

  • Open the browser you use
  • Go to Help in the menu bar at the top of the browser
  • Click on Help
  • From the menu that comes up, select About Internet Explorer
  • A window pops up with information about IE
  • This will include the version number.

What are the alternatives and where do I get them?

Barclay supports a number of alternatives to IE6 but before you download the software make sure your computer meets the system requirements outlined on the websites:

Browser information      How to download
Internet Explorer 7 and 8
Version 8 is the latest in Microsoft’s browser series
Mozilla Firefox 3.6 plus
From Mozilla, Firefox has grown market share in recent years
Safari 5
Apple’s browser for the Mac is also available in a version for PCs
Google Chrome
The search engine’s free web browser

Other browsers are available but these are not currently supported by Barclays.
