Avoid Unpaid Transaction Fees and take control of your money

What is Control Feature?

Take control of your money and put an end to Unpaid Transaction Fees, for a small monthly fee that could save you money.

If you regularly have transactions returned because of a lack of funds, and as a result incur charges, Control Feature could be for you.

Control Feature costs £8 per month.

Add Control feature in the Features Store if you have a:

Barclays Bank Account

Premier Current Account

Do you sometimes go through periods of financial difficulty? Are you frequently charged for returned transactions? For a small monthly fee, Control Feature can give you the assurance of knowing how much your fees will be, helping you to manage your money and get back on track.

Why add Control Feature to your account?

  • We'll return any transactions where you don't have enough funds, including cheque payments, Direct Debits and standing orders, without any Unpaid Transaction Fees. Please remember, this won't prevent any charges or fees that are applied by companies when you can't cover your payments
  • You won't have to pay the £8 Unpaid Transaction Fee on days when payments are returned, but if you have any borrowing facilities on your account you'll be charged the highest fee for that day, which is between 75p and £5 per day depending on whether you're in your overdraft or Emergency Borrowing
  • Use Control Feature only when you need to – just switch it on during times of financial difficulty, and off when you're back on track
  • We'll review your usage of Control Feature and if it looks like you no longer need it, we'll contact you to recommend cancellation

Is Control Feature right for me?

We have a range of free tools to help you get through periods of financial difficulty. If you're already using Money Tools, Text Alerts and Barclays Mobile Banking and are still struggling, Control Feature might be a good choice. To help you decide whether it's right for you, we've made some calculations.

How does it work?

Here's a good example – on a day where Control Feature stops an Unpaid Transaction Fee, you'll still be charged the next applicable fee for that day, which varies depending on whether you're in your overdraft or Emergency Borrowing. So if, for example, you're using Emergency Borrowing, which has a fee of £5 a day, Control Feature will stop the £8 unpaid fee, so you'll only pay £5. Without Control Feature you would have to pay £8 for that particular day.

Important information

Your mortgage or rent, loan and credit card repayments and utility bills won't be paid if you have insufficient funds in your account, even if you haven't paid an Unpaid Transaction Fee. An overdraft facility could be a good option to help you manage your money, so if you haven't considered this, get in touch to find out about the overdraft options you could apply for. Overdrafts are subject to application, status and income verification.

If you have any unprocessed payments or outstanding fees and charges when you register for Control Feature, these will still be processed, even if this takes you into an unauthorised overdraft. In this case, the usual fees and charges will apply.

Overdraft information

Even if you don't add Control Feature, there is still a £15 overdraft buffer on your account, which means if you exceed an agreed overdraft facility by less than £15 you won't pay any Unpaid Transaction Fees.

We give all our current account customers a grace period, which means you have until 3pm (UK time) to pay in enough money to avoid any items being returned that day. The money needs to be immediately available to use, so you could either transfer money from another personal account you have with us via Barclays Mobile Banking, Online Banking or Telephone Banking, or pay in cash at your local branch.
