You can apply if you
- Are studying for an undergraduate qualification for at least 2 academic years full time or post-graduate for 1 year or more
- Are going to a recognised higher education institute
- Are over 18 years old
- Plan to pay your main source of funding into your new account and use the account as your main bank account
How to apply
Once you've completed the online application, you'll need to visit a branch so we can confirm your student status and identity.
Make sure to bring these things to a branch
Proof of identity – this can be your:
- full and current passport
- a current photocard driving licence, or
- a non-UK national photocard ID card
Proof of UK address – this can be your
- UK bank or credit card statement (no more than 3 months old and not an internet print-out)
- Utility bill (no more than 3 months old and not for your mobile phone)
Proof that you’re a student – this can be your
- University letter confirming your enrolment
- UCAS letter (no more than 12 months old)
- Student ID card (not a student union card)
- Student loans letter with a recognised letterhead
Terms and conditions
If you’re not happy with your account, you have a 14-day period in which to contact us to cancel your account or switch to another account. This begins on the account opening date or the date you receive your terms and conditions and other account information, whichever is the later.
If you contact us within this time to cancel or switch your account, we’ll refund any account fees you‘ve paid. If you cancel or switch your account later, you won’t be refunded the account fees. To cancel or switch your account, write to Barclays, Leicester LE87 2BB.
We want to hear from you if you’re unhappy with the service you received from us. Letting us know your concerns lets us put matters right for you and improve our service to all our customers. You can complain in person, in a branch, in writing, by email or over the phone. You can get a leaflet detailing how we deal with complaints in any of our branches, on this site or from the Barclays Information Line on 0800 400 1004. The line is open between 7am-11pm, 7 days a week. Alternatively, write to Barclays, Leicester LE87 2BB.
If we don’t resolve your complaint internally to your satisfaction, you may be able to refer it to the Financial Ombudsman Service at South Quay Plaza, 183 Marsh Wall, London E14 9SR (telephone: 08000 234 567). The Financial Ombudsman Service is an organisation set up by law to give consumers a free and independent service for resolving disputes with financial firms. Details of those who are eligible complainants can be obtained from the Financial Ombudsman Service.
Financial Services Compensation Scheme and your account
We’re covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS). This means the FSCS can compensate you if we’re unable to meet our financial obligations. Your deposits up to £85,000 can be covered under the scheme. If you have a joint account, each account holder is covered up to this amount, so your deposits up to £170,000 can be covered.
It’s important to note that the £85,000 limit isn’t per account – it’s for the combined amount in all accounts you may have with us as Barclays Bank PLC. This includes deposits you have with any of our trading names: Barclays, Barclays Bank, Barclaycard, Barclays Business, Barclays Capital, Barclays Corporate, Barclays Direct, Barclays UK & Ireland Private Bank, Barclays International Private Banking, Barclays Premier Barclays Private Bank, Barclays Wealth and Woolwich Mortgages.
The scheme doesn’t cover deposits held at branches in the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man.
