‘I never expected to win, especially when I saw the competition going out on Sky Sports HD, so when I got the call I was flabbergasted and over the moon at the same time. What a fantastic prize and the chance to treat 2 friends as well. This year will be my 50th year as a Barclays customer – what a way to celebrate that milestone.
‘My passion for golf has spanned 45 years. I am a member of The Drift Golf Club at East Horsley Surrey and am also a member of Quinta da Boavista near Lagos in the Algarve where I was club champion in 2009. Lynda, my wife, and I spend about 4 months of the year living in Portugal with me playing golf nearly every day. The highlight of my golfing history was playing 18 holes with Tiger Woods in Denver.
‘The funniest story for me was when I was on business in Japan I played golf at 9am Saturday morning, then later that day I caught a 5pm flight to San Francisco where I was living. With the 17-hour time change I actually landed at 8am on the same Saturday (groundhog day). I then went straight to my then golf club La Rinconada and teed off again at 9am on the same Saturday. So I have played golf on the same day at the same time in 2 different continents.’ – Alan Bell
