Chip and PIN cards have been introduced to help stop card fraud. A card with a chip in it is harder to copy, and using a PIN makes it less likely that a card can be used fraudulently.

Since 14 February 2006, everyone who has a Chip and PIN card can no longer sign for purchases - they have to use the PIN instead. Chip and PIN cards have successfully reduced card fraud in Europe and UK retailers are hoping they will do the same here.

But what if you have problems using a PIN? If you have a disability which makes using a PIN difficult (either because of dexterity problems, visual impairment or difficulty remembering the number), get in touch and we'll tell you about the options you have when paying by card.

Also, if the PIN you have been given is difficult to remember, you can easily change it for one that is more memorable. Simply go to any cash machine, put your card in and follow the instructions to change your PIN to something of your choice.
