Driving

Once you've got to grips with driving on the right, driving in Spain is relatively easy and the roads are good, except in rural areas.

Here are a few practical tips and information we think you'll find useful if you're planning to drive in Spain.

  • Speed limits are 120km/h for motorways, 90-100km/h for open roads, 50km/h in built-up areas
  • Seatbelts must be worn in the front and rear
  • Spain has stricter drink driving laws than the UK, only allowing 0.5 milligrams of alcohol per millilitre of blood, compared to 0.8 in the UK. As a guide, you should drink no more than one pint of lager or one glass of wine although our advice is not to drink at all. The limits are low, fines are high and police checks are frequent
  • Speeding and other traffic offences are subject to on-the-spot fines
  • If you're resident in Spain, you must either have your EU driving licence stamped, or exchange it for a Spanish licence
  • The minimum age for driving in Spain is 18 for a car and motorcycle over 75cc. Third party insurance is the minimum legal requirement for Spain.
