It's important you know about the health and welfare system in Spain. When you've settled in to your Spanish home, through Spain Solutions, we can help you find and register with an English-speaking doctor so that you know there's help available if you need it. For medical assistance, including finding your nearest pharmacy, you can give the Mapfre Group a call and they'll be happy to provide you with all the information you need.

The Spanish National Health Service

The Spanish equivalent of the NHS offers both public and private healthcare and is free of charge for anyone who makes social security payments, receives a state pension, is unemployed or under the age of 18. In fact, 98% of the population of Spain is covered by the state health system.

However, please be aware that free treatment is not available at every hospital and waiting lists tend to be long.

Spanish medical card

The EU reciprocal agreement means that British people are entitled to treatment under the Spanish healthcare system, but in order to get it, you'll need an official medical card called a Tarjeta de SS, which is easily obtained from your local social security office (Oficina del Instituto Nacional de Seguridad Social).

A helping hand with your health
