How to apply
You don't even need to be in Spain to set up your bank account there. We could do it all for you from the UK. But either way, you'll need to provide us with some personal information and proof of your identity.
Opening a Local Bank Account from the UK
We realise that it's not always possible for people in the UK to apply for their Barclays current accounts in Spain in person. That's why we've created our Account Opening Pack which you can get if you Contact Us today.
It contains:
- Our standard brochure outlining the services Barclays Spain can provide.
- An account opening form (solicitud de apertura). This form is made up of four pages, the last of which is in English. It's designed for up to two account holders. We've also included samples of completed forms, using sample customer details, to help you complete this form.
- A signature card. It will need to be signed, in a Barclays branch, by all the account holders.
- A declaration of fiscal residence. To be completed by any account holder not resident in Spain.
- A letter to Barclays in the UK, confirming how they can help you.
- An envelope for returning your completed Spanish Mortgage application to Barclays in Spain.
In Spain
The simplest way to open your account is to visit any one of our 450 or so branches across Spain.
Find your nearest branch
By law you'll need to provide us with the following, in person:
- Your passport
- Proof of your residential address (e.g. a utility bill or bank statement less than three months old)
At the branch, we will take copies of your documents and guide you through our current account opening forms and declaration of fiscal residence, which you'll need to sign.
We could then open your account immediately.*
Once you have your pack, you will need to take the following documents to any Barclays office in the UK: the completed account opening pack, your passport(s), proof of address (recent utility bills, driving licence, or council tax bill), and a recent bank statement (bank statement only needed if you are not an existing Barclays customer in the UK).
They will verify your identity and send the complete pack to the branch in Spain. Your current account will then be opened and an account number sent to you. On receipt you should immediately transfer an initial balance of at least €1,500 into your new account.
*Barclays Spain reserves the right to refuse to provide banking services at its own discretion or to ask for additional documentation, as it deems appropriate.
