Murcia

  • Developments are being built with an upmarket and mature clientele in mind
  • Many marketing experts are touting it as the next big thing for the golfing fraternity
  • An international airport is due to open in nearby Corvera in 2008

Growing numbers of tourists have been attracted to this area in southeast Spain in recent years. Golf is big news in the area: the La Manga courses are globally renowned and together with sympathetic development that avoids the high-density schemes of other costas, a mature and discerning type of customer is being drawn to the area.

Property is relatively cheap compared to that in its northern neighbour, the Costa Blanca, and the cost of living is very reasonable. The Costa Calida ('Warm Coast') enjoys an average 315 days of sunshine per year - great for a long-term stay, an impulsive week away in the winter and for rental opportunities to other holidaymakers.

Inland from the coast there is fertile land, such as the Jumilla winemaking region, sheltered by mountainous terrain - hence the area is known as the 'Garden of Spain'. Planning controls mean that Murcia won't be overrun by tourists, but there is significant investment in roads, hospitals and a new airport which should ensure a healthy future for the region.
