Corporate Responsibility - Barclays in the Community

Whether it’s donating time, knowledge or money, we know we can make a lasting difference in the community. And we’re taking our responsibilities seriously – investing more than £39.1 million last year.

Our community programme concentrates on three key areas.

Banking on brighter futures
Financial know-how. As a bank, we obviously have a fair bit. And as a business, we have even more knowledge besides. By sharing our skills – and our money – we can help people out of poverty, disadvantage and debt to give them a brighter future.

Giving money advice and helping people into work or self-employment. Improving financial inclusion and educating people about money so they can better manage however much they have. There are many different ways we – and our colleagues – are helping people look to an altogether better future.

Looking after local communities
Wherever we are, we’re part of a local community. From local hospices to kids’ sports facilities, if it matters to the people in the local community, it matters to us. We can help through donations, sponsorship and our skills and expertise.

With Barclays Spaces for Sports, we’re investing £30 million over three years in grassroots sports, creating everything from basketball courts to five-a-side pitches, cricket grounds and skateboard parks. And our colleagues are getting involved in volunteering too.

Charity begins at work
We want to make it as easy as possible for our people to get involved in the community. It’s their choice who, when and how to help – we’ll simply offer our support wherever we can.

We offer work time and grants for volunteering, and match pound for pound the fundraising and giving efforts of our employees.

In 2005, more than 26,000 Barclays people around the world gave their time and money to fundraise and volunteer for the causes that matter to them most, benefiting more than 7,500 different charities and community groups. With our matching, more than £13.4 million was raised last year – and more than £40 million in the last four years.
