UK Banking - Alison Tattersall

Alison Tattersall

I'd say my career so far has been a good example of just how many different opportunities Barclays can offer - I've been lucky since joining to get involved at the sharp end of quite a few areas of our business.

I started out in our investment banking arm where I was part of the project finance team working on some major deals such as the sale of Canary Wharf. After that I went on to lead Internal Communications within Corporate and Commercial banking.

From there I was asked to assist two of our most senior people; fantastic experience, but I had to join the gym to keep up with them! I'm not sure how many other companies have the scale or the willingness to give their people such a range of opportunities.

I'm currently a Wealth Business Partner within our marketing team where it's my job to maximise the income we get from our Wealth products - that's investment and protection products - among our personal customers.

It's difficult to generalise, but a typical day could involve meeting with colleagues from Barclays Capital to design a new investment product or sitting down with a Regional Director to decide how we can best deliver that product in branch. There's also a fair amount of number crunching as it's vital that I understand where our money is coming from. In amongst all that, I'll probably be working on more tactical projects such as monitoring a new telephone marketing campaign and looking for ways to improve its performance.

Until recently I might also have fitted in some study, as I've just completed the marketing exams to go with my professional banking qualifications. Ongoing development is real feature of life at Barclays - our business is constantly changing and you have to learn if you're going to keep up. That's what makes life so interesting.
