International Retail and Commercial Banking - Bertha Dadson

Bertha Dadson

My career progression in Barclays has been remarkable. Within the last seven years I have moved up from being a supervisor to the Head of IT with my performance hitting the 'TOP' rating last year.

It is a very varied and challenging role as the IT department supports directly and indirectly most of the services provided by the Bank.

My first task each day is to ensure that all systems are available to our branches and functions so that they can do their jobs properly and serve our customers to the highest standard. Once that is done I might deal with emails or prepare for a meeting. I always have lots of meetings scheduled which tend to involve either planning projects or advising on day-to-day IT issues. I also make sure I find time every day to coach and mentor my staff.

I have been involved in some major projects since taking on my current role. They have included reorganising the whole IT function within this part of the bank and migrating our country processing centres to a regional centre, then to Zimbabwe. My role on these project teams is generally Senior IT supplier, so I have a lot of contact with external companies as well as with my colleagues throughout the bank.

I am currently on a three-month secondment to International Retail & Commercial Banking (IRCB) to share my experience with the team and learn from them. So far, I have worked with the IRCB Accounts team to gain a better understanding of the IT costs, the current and future IT strategies and trends within the bank. I have also shared information about Ghana as a country and the role of Barclays within the country. By working together in this way we hope to find ways we can work more closely as an international team to achieve Barclays' vision to be a Top 5 bank.
