Barclays
International Retail and Commercial Banking - Tania Viarnaud

After graduating from university, I spent just over three years working as a management consultant. This gave me lots of project management experience, but I got to the point where I felt ready to focus on a specific industry and sharpen my strategic and commercial skills. A friend recommended Barclays to me and I decided that, as an international leader, it had the growth potential to offer me a real variety of career opportunities.
I'm currently a Business Development Manager in the International Retail and Commercial Banking business. My job involves a lot of interaction with others - it's very rare a day goes by where I don't talk to fellow team members, research units or our colleagues in other countries. There's also a fair bit of desktop research and the preparation and presentation of key findings and proposed actions. Depending on what project I'm on, my day is a mix of all these things.
I've been involved in a couple of big projects this year, both of which had something in common. The first was our annual Medium-Term Planning process where I was primarily responsible for liaising with the Italian business and helping them put together their submission. The other major project involved the planning of our growth strategy in Italy - this was an exciting piece of work involving quite a lot of desktop research plus working sessions with colleagues from Italy and Spain and stakeholder management.
I came here wanting to develop my strategic and commercial skills and I've certainly done that. Barclays has given me both fantastic role models and challenging co-workers, which highlights how crucial being able to manage relationships is. I've built up a real understanding of how our business sits in the market and I'm much more comfortable now with the decision-making process and the ramifications of my decisions.
