Barclays
Central Support - Adrian Walcott

I came to the Barclays marketing team from an advertising agency and found there was quite a contrast. Marketing here is much more commercially focused - it's about results above all else.
When I joined, I was straightaway given responsibility for delivering the marketing communications plans for product and new business launches.
This gave me the chance to work across our Business and Premier Banking teams and to learn a lot about our business quite quickly. I was working on high profile projects with very senior people, so that really tends to focus the mind.
Right now, I'm working in brand management. My current project is a major one - it's the development and launch of our new brand positioning for Barclays UK Banking. What this means is that we're looking at how we want to be perceived by all of our customers and at how we need to develop our brand to achieve that. Every day, I'm working with colleagues from all over the business and also with external agencies and other suppliers who are involved in communications.
You're never quite sure, no matter how much research you do, how things are going to be received, but it's been great to see that people are buying into the direction we are taking the brand. It makes all the hard work worthwhile.
Development has been a big feature of my time here, and not just in terms of progressing from role to role. I've also been sponsored to do an MA in Strategic Marketing Management. I'm quite proud of the fact that I managed to complete it while still working full-time. You can be surprised at what you can achieve when you work with talented people who are continually inspiring you to raise the bar.
