School Leaver Profiles

What's it really like working for Barclays?

Here are some of our employees who have joined us from school and their thoughts on working life at Barclays. Take a look for an idea of the breadth of opportunities available.

Soraya Ishaq

Soraya Ishaq"After returning to England from working abroad, I decided I wanted to start a career. I was looking for a job that would mentally challenge me, in a recognised organisation, with good prospects, so after seeing an advertisement for Barclays in a London newspaper I applied.

I went through the interview process and have now been working for Barclays for just over six months. Covering a wide range of administrative duties including payments, enquiries and liaising with management, I've not only gained a solid knowledge in banking, but additional computer skills and interpersonal skills too. But I don't let all that hard work get in the way of my social life! I enjoy socialising with friends, keeping fit and I get on well with my work colleagues and have made some good friends. We have regular social events to help us with teambuilding and reward us for our hard work."

Seb Tant

Seb Tant"I came to work for Barclays after successfully completing an interview organised through a recruitment agency. I thought Barclays would be a good place to work because there are so many different career paths to choose from and a wide variety of roles and responsibilities. Barclays is a great place for school leavers because you don't need previous banking or office experience as they offer really good training courses. Through a supportive team leader and quarterly reviews I have been able to effectively manage my workload and balance it with my social life. When I'm not working I like to go windsurfing, sailing, skiing and out with friends. Working during the week can sometimes limit how often I do some of these hobbies as they involve travelling to the coast, but without a job I couldn't do any of them. So far, I've been involved in opening and closing accounts, cancelling and issuing new credit and debit cards, transferring money and generating mortgage quotes. Working here has definitely given me a lot more self-confidence and independence."

Nicholas Howell

Nicholas Howell"After proving I was an asset to the team as a temp, I was encouraged to apply for a permanent position within the Barclays Group. I had an interview with my line manager for the role of Support Officer, which involves contacting local Processing Centres, Customer Service sections and other banks to investigate Sterling based queries. I was offered the position by my team leader and have now been here for 10 months. I receive regular coaching on areas I feel need improvement and fully enjoy developing my career. The development within Barclays is excellent, and with Barclays University on the intranet you can order books, videos and CD-roms to develop yourself within your role or prepare for a future position. My colleagues made me feel very welcome when I joined, and always helped me out if I needed any assistance. And I'm already looking to the future. My career goal is to be a Relationship Director by the time I am 30."
