If you’ve graduated within the last 3 years, you can apply for an overdraft of up to £3,000 (subject to status).

This is a breakdown of the fee-free amounts available based on how long ago you graduated. The maximum overdraft you can apply for with this account is £3,000.

1st year after graduation: Up to £3,000
2nd year after graduation: Up to £2,000
3rd year after graduation: Up to £1,000

Overdrafts (including fee free amounts) are subject to status and application so the amount offered may be different to that shown in the example. All borrowing is repayable on demand. The fees shown here are variable, which means we can change them – although we will let you know before we do this.

To apply for an overdraft you must be a UK resident.

When overdraft fees apply

If you go over your fee-free overdraft amount but within your arranged overdraft limit, you’ll be charged a daily fee on your whole balance.

The daily fees are as follows:

Up to £1,000 – no fee
Over £1,000 and up to £2,000 – 50p a day
Over £2,000 – £1 a day

Eligibility

If you have a Barclays Student Additions Account, your account will be upgraded to the Higher Education Account following your graduation.

To be eligible you’ll need

  • To be 18 years of age or older
  • To have completed your full-time higher education within the past 3 years
  • To live in the EU
  • To be in permanent employment or have a firm job offer (minimum 6-month contract)

What you need to apply

To confirm your identity, you'll need to bring in 2 original documents (not photocopies) from this list when opening your account.

We also need to see proof that you’ve completed your studies, such as your degree certificate.

14-day trial period

If you’re not happy with your account, you have a 14-day period in which to cancel your account or switch to another account. This begins on the account opening date or the date your receive your terms and conditions and other account information, whichever is later.

Your feedback

We want to hear from you if you’re unhappy with our service. You can complain in person, in a branch, in writing, by email or over the phone. You can get a leaflet detailing how we deal with complaints in any of our branches, on this site or from the Barclays Information Line on 0800 400 1004. The line is open between 7am-11pm, 7 days a week. Alternatively, write to Barclays, Leicester LE87 2BB.

If we don’t resolve your complaint internally to your satisfaction, you may be able to refer it to The Financial Ombudsman Service, Exchange Tower, London, E14 9SR (telephone: 08000 234 567). The Financial Ombudsman Service is an organisation set up by law to give consumers a free and independent service for resolving disputes with financial firms.
