Critical illness protection pays out a lump sum upon diagnosis of a specified critical or terminal illness. The policy holder decides how best to spend the money, from paying off the mortgage, to meeting private health care bills.

Unlike income protection, for example, which pays a regular amount monthly, critical illness protection consists of a one–off payment, after which the cover ends.
