Why won't the gates open when I touch my contactless Barclays debit card or Barclaycard on a Transport for London (TfL) reader?

There are 3 reasons why the gate may not open or you get shown a red light:

  • You've touched 2 or more contactless cards (or your contactless card and an Oyster) on the reader at the same time
  • Your TfL account has been disabled because of an unpaid TfL fare. You can resolve this through your online TfL account or by phoning TfL on 0343 222 1234. Once resolved, it may take up up to 30 minutes before you can use your card to travel again. However, you should still be able to use your card with other retailers
  • Your account is not in order (eg, you're over your limit). Please contact us to resolve the issue. Once resolved, you'll need to contact TfL so that they can approve your card for future travel.  Please be aware that it may take up to 30 minutes before you can use your card to travel again
