Any investment portfolio package offered by Barclays was worth looking at

Why Tony Blaker started investing with Smart Investor when he retired from the police force.

Who's it for? All Investors

The value of investments can fall as well as rise and you could get back less than you invest. If you’re not sure about investing, seek professional independent advice.

Tony Blaker retired from his career in the police force in April and had a lump sum to invest. He says he turned to Barclays ‘to get value for money on his investments’. Read about Tony’s journey with Smart Investor:

After a long career in the police force I retired in April. I wanted to do something sensible with a lump sum I received and knew that leaving it in cash was a sure way for its value to be eroded by inflation over the next 10 years.

I had been in touch with a financial adviser about how to invest the money and was happy with the recommendations.

What put me off was the investment costs applied to pay the adviser.

I’ve been a Barclays customer since I left school and feel it is a reliable and a trustworthy company. I felt confident that any investment portfolio package offered by Barclays was worth looking at.

I spoke to my Barclays Premier Relationship Manager Dan, who was able to helpfully spell out my options for investing through the bank. There was no hard-sell, but instead a useful explanation of the different ways to access the stock market within a Stocks and Shares ISA and general investment account.

Smart Investor really appealed to me as I could access the kinds of investment funds I wanted and knew that as much of my money as possible would be going into my investments rather than being spent on paying a large fee.

Having made my decision to use Smart Investor I spoke to Dan again and he walked me through everything so I could get the most out of the service.

The account opening and fund selection process is very straightforward. But I didn’t want to commit time to choosing each individual fund to invest in, so I decided to go for the pre-packed funds offered by the Ready-Made Investment range. I was keen for someone else to do the thinking and the selection on my behalf. I found it easy to identify the right package, from a selection of five, that matched my appetite for risk and my goal for growth.

I can use the Barclays app to keep an eye on my money with just a few taps of the screen. But the whole point of me selecting Ready-made Investments was so that I didn’t need to spend lots of time researching and reviewing my choices. It’s nice to know that the selection has been made by the experts and I can get on with my hobbies such as cycling, clay pigeon shooting and skiing when I can get away.

Even though I retired, I didn’t want to stop working completely so I still do a part-time role working on technology programmes for policing.

Daniel Hudson, Barclays Premier Relationship Manager, says: “Having a lump sum to invest is one of the many triggers to exploring the world of investment. Even at retirement there’s still a substantial time horizon for people to want to grow their wealth.

“It was a pleasure to help Tony by talking him through the options available at Barclays.”
