About funds

Third-party managers work by combining your money with that of other investors. There are a number of routes you may wish to take when it comes to traditional funds – here we’ve detailed some of the benefits and drawbacks of each. Whatever you choose, your portfolio will be managed by our seasoned investment team.

The value of investments can fall as well as rise. You may not get back what you originally invested.

Equity funds

Funds that invest in major stock markets from around the world.

  • A solution to suit your strategy and ambitions
  • Good for diversifying your portfolio
  • Keep in line with your risk profile – only take risks you’re comfortable with
  • Equites can be more volatile than bonds

Fixed-income funds

Access to the bond market and the opportunity for a regular income.

  • Designed to try to generate a consistent income
  • Good for diversifying your portfolio
  • Often used to achieve longer-term goals
  • Income levels cannot be guaranteed – fixed-income funds will create variable levels of income

Sector funds

Invest in companies that operate in particular industries or sectors – including commodity funds.

  • Chance to invest in a single sector
  • A selection to suit your strategy
  • Leverage specialist knowledge in target sectors
  • Less diversified than other funds, so may be more volatile than other options

Money Market funds

A shorter-term investment option that may carry a lower risk with higher interest rates than savings accounts.

  • Diverse portfolios to select to suit your risk profile
  • Experienced fund managers

Things to consider

For each of these options, you risk losing capital.

These funds are generally only suitable for medium-to long-term investment – at least three years. The income you get, and the value of the fund itself, can fall as well as rise.
