Forces Help to Buy

Borrow up to 50% of your salary to help you buy a home

Apply for an interest-free loan of up to half your salary to a maximum of £25,000, to contribute to your deposit and pay your solicitor and estate agent fees.

Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage.

How the Forces Help to Buy scheme works

Until 31 December this year, you can apply for a loan1 to help buy your first home, or move to a new home. The loan can be repaid over up to 10 years.

Get help to buy a home

You can apply to borrow as much as half your yearly salary before tax – up to £25,000. Use the money to cover all or part of your deposit and to pay fees associated with the purchase, such as estate agent and solicitor fees.

Who’s eligible?

The scheme is open to personnel who have completed the pre-requisite length of service and have more than six months of service remaining. The loan can only be used to buy a home you or your family will live in – not a buy-to-let property.

How to apply

Log in to your Joint Personnel Administration (JPA) account through the Defence Gateway or your Unit’s JPA suite. You can ask for advice on the scheme through your Chain of Command and Personnel Agency. You will need to repay the loan before you can leave the service.
