The financial sector has an important role to play in supporting the transition to a low-carbon economy and at Barclays, we are determined to play our part consistent with our Purpose and relevant business and risk considerations.

In March 2020, we announced our ambition to be a net zero bank by 2050, becoming one of the first banks to do so. We made it clear at the time that we would approach the climate challenge thoughtfully and transparently, engaging with our shareholders and other stakeholders and reporting our progress.

We have a three-part strategy to turn our net zero ambition into action. Over the coming years, our strategy will continue to evolve and adapt to reflect external factors affecting the shape and timing of the transition to a low-carbon economy.

C.S. Venkatakrishnan, Group Chief Executive, Barclays

“The industrial revolution took over a century to transform the planet, and we cannot hope to undo overnight its deleterious impact on the environment. We are still at an early stage of this  journey, but are committed to the destination and will persevere to reach it. One of my foremost priorities is for Barclays to demonstrate steady and significant progress against our net zero ambition.”

How we’re putting our climate strategy into action

Our climate strategy is driven by consideration of relevant risks and opportunities and our Purpose to deploy finance responsibly to support people and businesses, acting with empathy and integrity, championing innovation and sustainability for the common good and the long term.

The transition to a low-carbon economy is today’s defining opportunity for innovation and growth. We believe that Barclays can make the greatest difference by supporting our clients as they transition to a low-carbon business model, rather than by simply phasing out support for them. This is particularly true for our clients in highly carbon-intensive sectors.

We want to work alongside customers and clients as they transition to a low-carbon economy, using our advisory and financial expertise to help them navigate this period of extraordinary change. Here are some of the ways we’re helping to support the transition to a low-carbon economy:

  • Setting a target to facilitate $1trillion of Sustainable and Transition Financing between 2023 and the end of 2030
  • Announcing a new partnership between Barclays Eagle Labs and Carbon 13, which will support start-ups focused on sustainability and climate-tech innovation
  • Increasing investment of Barclays’ capital in global climate tech start-ups up to £500 million by the end of 2027
  • Expanding our Green Home mortgages to include buy-to-let properties, supporting more customers to purchase an energy efficient home
  • Launching our Greener Home Reward pilot in October 2022, which offers a cash reward of up to £2,000 for mortgage customers who install energy efficiency measures in their homes
  • Training Net Zero Specialists in our Specialist Client Solutions Team, to have 1-1 conversations with SME owners on the impact of transition on their business
