How to open an account

The value of investments can fall as well as rise and you could get back less than you invest. If you're unsure about investing, seek independent advice. We offer execution-only investment services. We don't give you advice about your investment decisions or make personal recommendations.

This short video will show you how to open a Smart Investor account.

You can open an account through the Barclays Mobile Banking app, if you already have a current account with us.

Or you can open one through the Barclays website if you don't already have an account.

For this example, we'll show you how to open an Investment ISA through the website.

Visit www.barclays.co.uk/smart-investor and from the 'Accounts and services' menu, select 'Investment ISA'.

Here you'll find details of what our Investment ISA offers, along with important information about fees and some FAQs.

You can also see related articles to find out more about the different accounts available to make sure you choose one that's right for you.

When you're ready, click on the 'No login? Apply here' button, or 'Log in and apply' if you already have another Barclays account. You'll be taken through a four-step process to open your account.

In step one you'll need to confirm that you're a UK tax resident, and to provide some personal details. You'll also be reminded that you can only open or contribute to one Investment ISA each tax year.

You'll need to read the terms and conditions, Financial Services Compensation Scheme information sheet and the privacy notice before opening your account. Tick the box to confirm you've read these then click 'Continue' to proceed.

In step two, you'll need to enter some personal details, contact information and confirm your nationality. When you've done that, click 'Continue'.

In step three, you'll be asked to provide details of a nominated bank account which you can use to fund your account.

In step four, check that all the details you have supplied are correct.

If you notice any incorrect information, use the 'Edit' button to amend the details before you tick the box and click 'Submit'.

In the final step, you'll see confirmation that you have successfully opened your Investment ISA. There's also some information about the communications we'll send you, plus a link to make a payment into your ISA.
